Choosing the Right Cladding for UK Weather: WPC vs. Aluminium vs. Cedar
UK rain plus long overcast winters is a punishing test for external cladding. Here is which materials survive it, which need re-oiling every spring, and which we would specify on our own house extension.
External cladding on a UK property faces horizontal rain, 4-6 months of low UV, and freeze-thaw cycles. The material you pick is the difference between a facade that still looks new in ten years and one you are re-oiling every March.
1. WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) cladding
WPC boards are extruded from recycled wood fibre bound in HDPE. Colour goes all the way through the board, so scratches do not reveal a different-coloured substrate. Zero maintenance beyond a hose-down twice a year. Expected life: 25+ years. Only downside: it looks pristine — some clients prefer weathered wood.
2. Powder-coated aluminium cladding
A-class fire rating, effectively unlimited lifespan and completely fade-resistant with a good polyester powder-coat. Best material for coastal properties (aluminium does not corrode in salt spray the way steel does). Downside is thermal bridging — you must design in a proper insulation layer behind it.
3. Thermally-modified cedar / accoya
Real timber, treated in low-oxygen kilns to lock the sugars away from mould and rot. Lasts 35+ years in UK weather. Expect the boards to silver evenly over 12 months to a stunning driftwood colour — or oil twice a year to keep the original warm tone. Highest cost per m² but hard to beat aesthetically.
4. Untreated softwood (spruce, larch)
Cheap up front, but UK weather is brutal to it. Expect black mould on north-facing elevations within 24 months and cupping/warping by year 4. We do not recommend it for anything you want to look at in a decade.

What we would spec on our own home
A mixed system: aluminium on the exposed weather-facing elevations (guaranteed maintenance-free) and thermally-modified cedar on the sheltered back-of-house for warmth. Third best: full WPC — you will thank yourself in year 8 when your neighbours are re-oiling.
Frequently asked
Do I need building regulations approval for cladding?
It depends on the property height and use. Domestic buildings under 11 m are typically permitted development, but always confirm with your local authority — especially for A1 vs A2 fire-rated materials.
How long does WPC cladding last in the UK?
Reputable brands warranty 25 years against splitting and rot. Real-world we regularly see 30+ years with only annual rinsing.
Which cladding is best for coastal properties?
Powder-coated aluminium — no rust, no swelling, no oil top-up. Marine-grade fixings are essential regardless of cladding choice.
